

Dr. Vilma Luz Cabán is the executive producer of La Casa de María: Trials & Triumphs, a documentary created in collaboration with director Joe Negrón.
DOCUMENTARY SUMMARY:
La Casa de María: Trials & Triumphs chronicles the journey of a Nuyorican daughter who returns to her mother’s ancestral homeland of Puerto Rico. The film centers on an act of devotion and resolve as a daughter works to fulfill her mother’s final dream. As she restores a family home, she seeks to preserve a legacy rooted in cultural memory and belonging.
The documentary follows Vilma’s determined path as she confronts challenges as significant as Hurricane María and a global pandemic.Through this process, the film reveals the emotional, physical, and cultural responsiveness needed to rebuild not only a home, but a sense of continuity across generations.
With evocative imagery, the film captures the nostalgia and resilience of Puerto Rico while documenting the trials and triumphs of reclaiming heritage and purpose.

The documentary premiered at the Bregamos Theatre in New Haven. Dr. Cabán has since presented the film, along with updates on Casa de María Publisher, at numerous student and community events hosted by the City University of New York on the Bronx Community campus.
The team looks forward to sharing the documentary with cultural centers, educational institutions, and community partners dedicated to storytelling, cultural preservation, and community engagement.
